Drug Abuse and Genetic Damage: the Sad Untold Story

Whether it’s recreational drug abuse or prescription drug abuse, there is an unseen element… an untold side of this story that many young and old drug abusers don’t often suspect.

What most drug abusers don’t know or give much thought to is the fact that all drugs have some toxic side effects when taken over an extended time. This includes gene mutation and destruction of bodily cells.

When a drug abuser has consistently used a particular drug, such as cocaine, heroin, meth, or a prescription medication, for an extensive time, the genetic structure of his cells can change to such an extent that:

  • The drug abuser’s affected cells may, after a time, begin to break down in their basic functions, or

  • The reproductive portion of each cell – the genetic material and message that is transmitted forth into any future children of the drug abuser - may be damaged by excessive drug use. The disastrous results can be seen in many pediatric wards in the form of deformities, premature births, Down Syndrome, crack babies and a number of other disturbing cases.

Excessive drug abuse can bring about what many consider to be only minor genetic changes. While that may or may not be true, the question is; “would you like to be the parent of a new born baby adversely affected by those ‘minor’ genetic changes in your body?”

If you’re a recreational or prescription drug abuser, a so-called minor change in your cellular genes could create a series of events leading to:

  • Abnormal protein production and utilization at the cellular level

  • Metabolic disturbances where your body’s cells can’t properly assimilate incoming nutrients and can’t get rid of cellular waste efficiently

  • Sluggish bodily performance where your body’s supply of available nerve force to each cell is dramatically reduced.

  • Dysfunction of organs and systems

  • Eventual tissue damage due to the build up of toxic waste in your cells and a lack of needed nutrients being fed to your body’s cells

When you allow your drug abuse problem to continue unchecked, these events can lead to serious symptoms of diseases, such as arthritis, cancer, emphysema, high blood pressure, depression and obesity.

It’s worth repeating that, if you’re a recreational or prescription drug abuser, any children you’re thinking of having may be horribly affected by your addictive habit. Once the damage is done it can rarely, if ever, be undone.

On the other hand, if you’re a child of parents where one or both were habitual drug abusers, take comfort in the fact that, given what may be your genetic limitations, you have within your grasp the power to ensure your quality of life can be as rich and fulfilling as you want it to be.

I have seen many patients, who were adversely affected physically, emotionally and psychologically, by the drug abuse issues of one or both parents, make remarkable recoveries by intelligent planning of their lifestyles and dietary habits.

Drug abuse is a problem of gigantic proportions that will be with us as long as we have a fascination in American society for wanting more stimulation and sensation in our lives.

Until we learn to be content with ourselves and begin focusing more on how we can be of greater service to our fellows and more attentive to the needs of our families and our nation as a whole, instead of only catering to our own wants and desires, drug abuse will be a constant, undesirable social element to be reckoned with.
